Since Trent Reznor did the Quake soundtrack people started paying more attention to gaming sound tracks

I don't reallly game anymore - call it a misspent youth of 2 decades of constant gaming...but I do recall my all time favourite (no surprises here...it's funky)...

I listened to a few recently, Fandango and Sam & Max were kinda big band, bebop cool.

What are your favourites?

Mass Effect 3. Just after the prologue scene when Earth gets invaded by the Reapers there's this subtle but haunting score being played, interrupted by the loud foghorn like blasts from the Reapers, which really brings out the atmosphere of despair, as you watch most of humanity wipe out in an instant. This is the musical theme for the entire game, invoking this feeling of futility in the face of an unbeatable enemy.

On a lighter note Tales of Zestiria has a kickass intro theme (worth a listen).

Honorable mention to the Final Fantasy series.

Hello! I'm a Front Line Assembly fan. They did great work on the AirMech soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkxGlTxilEE

I also enjoy Jesper Kyd's work. He started out in the demoscene scene, and has composed for Assassin's Creed, among others. Here's a link to the soundtrack to Assassin's Creed II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iriiZOeInDg

I love the soundtrack to the Dune game, released on Virgin Games in 1992: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUfGyfbzl9k A friend had an AT PC, with a 16 colour screen, and this game was a revelation.

Thank you for igniting some memories, Meron!

Thats a cool look behind the scenes! The guys in my band are raving about the soundtrack, gotta admit "BFG Division" got my fingers itching for a round of gaming, absolutely epic tune. And a 9 string guitar... Huh?

Thank you for igniting some memories, Meron!

Heh, thank my mate I used to game with - we was was having a nostalgia session and we was recalling the cooler moments of our gaming times together.

I really dig the Doom soundtrack (original and 3). I would DIG to be able to write music like this!

The iconic E1M1 sounds a lot like master of puppets by Metallica.

Haven't done any serious gaming for a looooooong time, but I used to love the music from Diablo 1, especially from the Town scene.
The soundtrack for the new Deus Ex is quite something as well.

I don't know the game (I mean, I know it exists, never played it) but I love this rendition of the skyrim tune that Andy McKee plays.

I absolutely LOVE the Dovahkiin theme from Skyrim. No guitar whatsoever, but it creates this honourable feeling I would expect ancient warriors got shortly before battle.

The old PC/Amiga game Dune had an awesome soundtrack- FM synth, generated live on the good old SoundBlaster. THe game version is here, there was also an album release at the time. Composer was Stephane Picq

Definitely the Mass Effect soundtracks (all of them really), this is the track Lu22 is talking about:

! No longer available

I believe it was written by Clint Mansell (Requiem For a Dream/The Fountain)

Bioshock Infinite because of the querky ragtime re-imagined covers of pop music and the sense of early Americana.

! No longer available

Doom (The newest one written by Mick Gordon)

! No longer available

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

! No longer available

This might be a nostalgia thing but I loved this game growing up and really still like the soundtrack Smiley

Here's a cool Medley somebody did of all the Ocarina of Time tracks :3

! No longer available

And Ben Levin using songs from Ocarina of Time to explain Modes Cheesy

! No longer available

Arcanum's soundtrack is also quite nice if you just want beautiful string music:

! No longer available

Final Fantasy OSTs can be quite good too

! No longer available

or covers of it

! No longer available

! No longer available

As for the Elder Scrolls games, I think the predecessor to Skyrim, Oblivion, has a better soundtrack Smiley

! No longer available (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

And it's predecessor Morrowind's is even better:

(This may be pure nostalgia)

Never played Morrowind, but I agree Oblivion has an awesome soundtrack. However, Skyrim's theme song beats Oblivion's to me.
