The theremin is usually regarded as an off beat instrument used by the shoo-whah mavericks to add another sound dimension.
Here it is being used in a traditional, classical capacity of a violin concerto piece:

Best known example of a theramin is the Beach Boys' Good Vibrations.

Notoriously difficult to play well. The clip of Clara Rockmore is impressive - she has really good dynamics and intonation (maybe a bit overboard on the vibrato though...).

Ive always believed that The Theremin was where Roland got the idea for the notorious 505.

I've actual have one on order, Been on order since Feb a little junior DIY theremin, should be getting in someday now..
